Treat Your Skin with Calendula

Calendula is a botanical superstar!

Calendula - pronounced (kah-len-ju-la) is a herb, also known as "pot marigold" that provides many benefits when used in skincare. It is a plant within the family Asteraceae, which is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe. Calendula flowers stand out with bright yellowy orange petals, and grows to 1-2 feet tall.

Compounds within Calendula - triterpenoids, saponins, micronutrients, carotenoids, flavonoids, and polysaccharides - are responsible for amazing skin-loving benefits. Properties which include anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-microbial and even collagen repair make it an important ingredient in skincare and wound healing.

Calendula flowers also demonstrate a strong bioadhesive or mucilaginous effect, which may not only help to decrease local inflammation by shielding tissues from irritants, but also facilitate tissue hydration.

Okay, now that we covered some scientific stuff, let's talk about skin issues that calendula can be used to treat. When applied topically, it is beneficial for any healing you may need including insect bites, bruises, blisters, cuts, cold sores, eczema and psoriasis. It can be used to keep wounds clean and to reduce signs of tenderness, redness, or inflammation and it will help new tissue to grow.

Calendula is also a wonderful ingredient in face care, and can benefit your skin in many ways.

  • Reduces redness and inflammation

  • Treats and heals blemishes

  • Helps to prevent breakouts

  • Hydrates dry thirsty skin

  • Brightens, enhances and evens out blotchy skin-tone
