Calendula - pronounced (kah-len-ju-la) is a herb, also known as "pot marigold" that provides many benefits when used in skincare. It is a plant within the family Asteraceae, which is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe. Calendula flowers stand out with bright yellowy orange petals, and grows to 1-2 feet tall.
Compounds within Calendula - triterpenoids, saponins, micronutrients, carotenoids, flavonoids, and polysaccharides - are responsible for amazing skin-loving benefits. Properties which include anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-microbial and even collagen repair make it an important ingredient in skincare and wound healing.
Calendula flowers also demonstrate a strong bioadhesive or mucilaginous effect, which may not only help to decrease local inflammation by shielding tissues from irritants, but also facilitate tissue hydration.
